An Experiment

By Rachael Williams

Let's run an experiment today.

Step 1: Set a timer for 10 minutes and go for a walk. Nothing but your thoughts, leave your phone quiet.

When the time is done, check in with yourself:

  • How long did that 10 minutes actually feel like?
  • Do you feel drained or more energetic?

Step 2: Later that same day, set another 10-minute timer and this time, scroll your favorite social media app.

Same check-in when it's done:

  • How long did that 10 minutes actually feel like?
  • Do you feel drained or more energetic?

There's no right or wrong answer, you're just observing like a scientist would.

Two more questions:

  • How much of your important stuff actually got pushed aside by that walk?
  • How much longer could you/would you have kept scrolling?

Many of us treat "I don't have time" as fact instead of feeling. This is a chance to test that against the same 10 minutes and with two completely different experiences of it.

When you compare the two, it might tell you something about where your time and your energy are actually going. Do you really not have 10 minutes to go for a walk or do a few exercises to build strength?
