Firsts

By Rachael Williams

The first of anything is always hard. This was the first weekly email I sent out. I'd been looking forward to doing it but it had been a non starter for a while.

It's not just writing that the first start is hard. Going to an event you've never attended before is hard. Your stomach gets a little knotted and you're looking around a lot more than you do on a typical day.

Even starting a fitness plan is hard. I feel it's more like writing this email. I know what to do, but where do I even start!? When it comes to doing a workout, the first movement is the hardest. It feels like you did but also didn't want to do it at the same time. But once you get started it's not so bad. Once you attend that event, it's a breeze and you know your way around next time. In jiu jitsu, the first match has the most nerves, after that it's not so bad.

Writing this today, it took putting a word on the page and it started to flow. The next one might not be that hard. But it could be too. That "getting started" phase.

It takes exposure to feel comfortable with something. That's why when I plan workouts they aren't full of variety. If you were having a hard time starting, getting to know the movements takes time. Once you feel comfortable with them it's not as hard to start.
