The thing apps miss

By Rachael Williams

I had a client tell me this week that work was about to get intense. Brutal, even. The kind of week where everything else falls away.

Then she showed up and logged her workouts anyway.

I told her: "Nicely done getting into the gym when you said work would be more intense this week."

She's leaving for vacation tomorrow, so I added: "I hope you have a great trip."

Here's what's important about what just happened, and why it might be the reason you keep abandoning fitness apps.

An app would've noticed those workouts too. It would've sent a notification. "Great job this week! Keep up the streak!" The same message it sends everyone. Automated. Meaningless. Because it doesn't know she was dealing with an insane work week. It doesn't know she's heading out of town. It just sees logged reps and sends back a pre-written congratulation.

But I saw the person.

Apps are incredible tools for data. They track everything. They quantify your effort. They remind you to move. But they can't do the one thing that actually keeps people showing up long-term: they can't recognize you. They don't know what it cost you to show up when everything else was pulling you in different directions.

When you log a workout in an app, you're reporting to a machine. When you work with a person who pays attention, you're being seen.

An app can't tell you that what you did was harder than it looks. It can't celebrate the part of you that shows up when everything else is falling apart. It can't remind you why you started on the Tuesday when nothing makes sense.

Most people try to use apps as substitutes for coaching. They think tracking plus motivation equals results. But motivation doesn't come from a notification. It comes from being known. From having someone who actually understands your life say, "I see what you're doing, and it matters."

Use the app for data. Use it for accountability. But don't expect it to be your coach.

Because your coach isn't a notification.

Your coach is someone who shows up and actually sees you.
