This week I was updating my website on a day I'd planned to do a workout. I got into it, and my workout window came and went.
That's how it's always been for me. I get busy and what I'm doing always becomes the priority. To combat that, when I worked in an office, I packed my gym bag and went to the gym before I went home because if I went home first, I wasn't going back out.
Now, I work out with my son as an after-school activity. He keeps me honest since I have to take to the gym anyway. On the days I'm not lifting with him, it has to be the first thing I do. Working at a gym helps, but not all the time because being around the equipment doesn't mean I actually use it. (maybe just like that treadmill or those dumbbells that's sitting in your room)
I know how important exercising is for muscle growth or maintenance, cell health, mental health, blood sugar; the list goes on. I also know "it only works because I work it."
On a busy day, knowing that has never been enough to get me to do it.
What has worked is a set time, with a setup where skipping takes more effort than going. A bag in the car. Someone waiting for me. Workouts first, before the rest of the day has a chance to take my attention and energy. Lunch break at the office.
If your workouts depend on finding time once the day is underway, the day will usually take it.
Pick the slot where you have no other option, and put it on the calendar like an appointment.
